History of Pittsford

Pittsford, NY, is one of many historic New York towns settled by pilgrims in the late 1700s. The town was officially incorporated and became its own city in 1827. Pittsford was named by the late Colonel Caleb Hopkins, a prominent businessman who moved to the area of Smallwood, the town that would later become known as Pittsford, in 1800.

Hopkins was commissioned as a lieutenant in a local militia in 1804 and attained the rank of major in 1807. In 1809, he received the commission as a collector of customs from President James Madison. Hopkins saw active combat in the War of 1812, a conflict between the U.S. and UK.

When Hopkins returned to his hometown after the war, Smallwood had split into the cities of Brighton and Pittsford, which Hopkins named after his birthplace in the state of Vermont.
